A foundation wall that is bowing inward is not settling, it is being pushed. Saturated soil against the outside of the wall is heavier than dry soil and exerts far more lateral force, and in a region with a wet winter and spring that force arrives on a seasonal cycle. Block walls feel it first, because a stacked assembly resists bending through its mortar joints rather than through continuous reinforcement, so pressure shows up as a horizontal crack near mid-height and a slow inward lean above it. Poured walls bow too, just later and less obviously. The repair has two halves and both matter. The wall itself is reinforced, using carbon fibre straps bonded to the interior face for walls with limited deflection, or steel I-beams or wall anchors where the movement is further along. Then the load is reduced, by fixing whatever is putting that much water into the soil against the wall, because a reinforced wall standing against unchanged pressure is a wall carrying a fight it has already been losing.

How much bowing is too much?

Contractors and engineers generally treat deflection under about two inches as territory where carbon fibre reinforcement is a reasonable answer, and greater movement as calling for steel bracing, anchors, or a rebuild. Those are rules of thumb rather than code numbers, and wall height, block condition, and whether the movement is still happening all shift them. The measurement matters more than the category: a wall recorded at a specific deflection can be checked again next spring against a number.

Does carbon fibre work?

For its intended job, yes. Carbon fibre is exceptionally strong in tension, which is exactly what a wall bending inward is short of, and bonded straps at the correct spacing prevent further deflection. What it does not do is push the wall back, and it does nothing about the water pressure causing the load. Used as a complete solution on its own it disappoints; used to reinforce a wall while drainage is corrected, it does what it says.

What does bowing wall repair cost?

National figures put bowing wall repair at roughly $4,000 to $12,000, which is about what a dozen carbon fibre straps across one wall comes to. Steel bracing or wall anchors cost more, and rebuilding a failed section is the highest of the three because it involves excavation, temporary support of the structure above, and new masonry. Any of those numbers should arrive alongside the drainage work, since the two are one project.

Why did this happen after a wet winter?

Because saturated soil is both heavier and, when it contains clay, expansive. Water increases the weight pressing against the wall and clay soils swell as they take it on, so the peak lateral load of the year usually arrives at the end of a wet stretch. That is also why the symptom seems to appear suddenly in late winter or spring when the movement has in fact been accumulating over several seasons.

Can the wall be pushed back to straight?

Sometimes, with wall anchors that are tightened progressively over weeks or months while the soil outside is relieved. It is slow, it is not always advisable, and it is not always necessary, because a wall that is stabilised at its current position and no longer moving is structurally sound even if it is not plumb. Which route is right depends on how far it has gone and what the wall is carrying.
